PLOT 25 is out on the street! You can get the June 2015 – July 2015 issue in bookstores and in our virtual store. If you subscribe to the magazine, you have a 20% discount on the price of the cover.
In this new edition of PLOT you can find subjects associated with new urban spaces, restructured programs and the search for an architectonic identity within a territory. Each section of the magazine has singular representations and illustrations that help understand the design strategies of different practices.
The magazine section investigates new layouts for art spaces in unexplored urban plots –Gallery Babilônia in the favela of Rio de Janeiro by Rua arquitetos–, the rise of spontaneous and planned art spaces in growing neighborhoods in Buenos Aires, and the restructuring of the program of an historic residence by Alexander Christophersen.
The practice section features two important segments: the first one explores the identity and culture in Belgian architecture and the second one is an insight on Iñaki Abalos´ On Dualisms, which in this case, are represented by two projects located in the outskirts of Spain.
The Belgium segment starts with an article by Christophe Van Gerrewey, architecture and literature critic. He explains that the narrative on Belgian architecture during the 20th century is simple: it doesn’t exist. Either way, he later clarifies that in 2015 there´s an important cultural shift. A new generation of energetic, confident and young architects stands out. Here he introduces the studios we later publish in detail: 51N4E, OFFICE KGDVS and Dierendonckblancke.
51N4E´s segment includes the following projects: TID tower, Speelpleinstraat and Buda Art Factory. OFFICE KGDVS´s segment includes: OFFICE 124: Oasis, OFFICE 90: School of Agriculture and OFFICE 62: Urban Villa. Lastly, Dierendonckblancke´s segment includes the Community Center Beselare and Het Gielsbos.
“Sobre los dualismos españoles”, an article by Florencia Medina, explains On Dualisms, a soon to come publication by Iñaki Ábalos, that serves as a theoretical background to introduce the two projects in this publication: Edificio de Servicios Plaza Mayor UAM by MTM Arquitectos and el Palacio de Congreso Vegas Altas by Pancorbo, De Villar, Chacón and Martín Robles. On Dualisms refers to the existence of a compositional tension generated by two morphological organizations theoretically incompatible that correspond to different universes or languages within a singular project.
In the theory section, as always, OOT by Ciro Najle, but this time he converses with Josep Ferrando. We complement it with a reproduction of a few fragments of the paradigmatic book Style, by Gottfried Semper. The book was entirely translated to Spanish by Juan Ignacio Azpiazu, who has collaborated with us by permitting the diffusion of a selection of chapters.
Babilônia Gallery. Rua Arquitetos. The photography gallery located in Chelsea, New York moves to the favelas of Rio de Janeiro. The architects base their design n the existing structure of the ruin of an unfinished house on the top of a hillock.
Work in progress. The production and consumption of art transforms the physiognomy of two areas of Buenos Aires: Villa Crespo and the Art District. We include two sectors of the Buenos Aires map to represent the expansion of art spaces and artists ateliers in these zones.
Slyzmud sala 2/ Ruth Benzacar. Nicolás Fernández Sanz.We highlight two projects with programs associated with art spaces. The first one being a gallery run by two young curators based in the Chacarita neighborhood, with the particularity of having two rooms of the gallery in two different plots, only a few meters away. On the other hand, the Ruth Benzacar Gallery is a classical gallery that was originally located on Florida Street and took the decision to move to Villa Crespo, a neighborhood which is slowly growing to become a new and spontaneous art district.
Casa Cavia. Alejandro Christophersen/ Kallos Turin. A private historical residence of a petit hotel typology is reconverted to contain a café, a perfume shop, a flower shop, and an editorial. Kallos Turin, an architecture and design studio with offices in London was in charge of the restructuring of the historical building.
Lugar común y cultura en la arquitectura belga. Chrisophe Van Gerrewey.Explains that the narrative of Belgian architecture during the 20th century is simple: it doesn´t exist. Either way, he later clarifies that in 2015 there´s an important cultural shift. A new generation of energetic, confident and young architects stands out. Here he introduces the studios we later publish in detail: 51N4E, OFFICE KGDVS and Dierendonckblancke.
51N4E. TID tower. Speelpleinstraat, Buda Art Factory. A studio based in Brussels focused on architecture design, strategic concept developments and spatial transformations. The office was founded in 1998. Today it´s directed by Johan Anrys and Freek Persyn and counts with 22 employees.
OFFICE KGDVS. OFFICE 124: Oasis, OFFICE 90: Agriculture School, OFFICE 62: Urban Villa. Founded in 2002 byKersten Geers and David Van Severen with offices in Brussels. In 10 years of trajectory, the office has obtained international recognition through it´s not constructed utopian projects and precise and idiosyncratic architecture.
Dierendonckblancke. Centro Comunitario Beselare, Het Gielbos. Founded in 1999 by Alexander Direndonck and in 2009 Isabelle Blancke is associated to the studio. Both studied in the Institute of Architecture San Lucas (Ghante, Belgium) and before starting their own independent practice thhey collaborated with internacional offices.
Sobre los dualismos españoles. Florencia Medina. An article by Florencia Medina, explains On Dualisms, a soon to come publication by Iñaki Ábalos, that serves as a theoretical background to introduce the two projects in this publication: Edificio de Servicios Plaza Mayor UAM by MTM Arquitectos and el Palacio de Congreso Vegas Altas by Pancorbo, De Villar, Chacón and Martín Robles. On Dualisms refers to the existence of a compositional tension generated by two morphological organizations theoretically incompatible that correspond to different universes or languages within a singular project.
Edificio de servicios Plaza Mayor UAM. MTM Arquitectos. How do you construct a park? Only though scale, density and the fluidity that appears in spaces capable to contain the multiplicity of characters of a contemporary individual. Under these premises, the architects developed a new service nucleus for the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, in the Cantoblanco campus.
Palacio de Congresos Vegas Altas. Pancorbo, de Villar, Chacón, Martín Robles. The project is located in a ambiguous situation: it´s urban and peripheral at the same time. The dualism is expressed in the architectonic layout: introverted, due to having most part of the program underground, but at the same time extroverted because there’s a visible building that rises as an urban lighthouse.
OOT 027/ Josep Ferrando. Ciro Najle and Josep Ferrando converse in the Universidad Pompeu Fabra in Barcelona.
Fragments of “Style in the Technical and Tectonic Arts, Or, Practical Aesthetics.” A manual for technicians, artists and art lovers. Author: Gottfried Semper. Edition y translation to Spanish: Juan Ignacio Azpiazu.
