Marina Abramovic exhibition at SESC Pompeia, Sao Paulo

After a year and a half of studies and development together with the artist herself, the project for the exhibition TERRA COMUNAL- MARINA ABRAMOVIC + MAI comes to life at Sesc Pompeia. Terra Comunal or Common Ground is based on Abramovic’s experiences in Brazil in 2012, when the artist came looking for places of power, “where the sky is big and cloudy…where the rain comes all at once and as soon as it starts, it stops. Where you can breath air with full lungs.” The exhibition will be divided into two parts: “Terra Comunal – Marina Abramovic”, the artist’s greatest retrospect in South America and “Terra Comunal – MAI”, the institute’s most ambitious undertaking to date.

The Abramovic Method is a series of exercises developed by the artist who aims to explore the limits of body and mind. Its practice detached from the distractions and hurry of the modern world, demands focus and introspection, providing those who engage in it a state of clarity and connection with their own self. By inviting the audience to participate in the Method the public will take on both roles, of the observer and the observed, a strong element present throughout the artist’s trajectory. During the exhibition a series of talks with Abramovic will also be held and eight Brazilian artists will premiere new site-specific interventions curated by Marina and the artists Paula Garcia and Lynsey Peisinger.

The project for this exhibition focuses on bringing together the strong energy present in the existing areas of Lina Bo Bardi’s iconic building Sesc Pompeia, with a strong and potent intervention that would maintain it’s integrity, architecture, materials and diversity of simultaneous uses while organizing the flow of people and creating private and silent spaces for a better appreciation of specific works. Two large suspended walls were constructed to organize the exhibitions main zones in the Espaço de Convivência or living area, while maintaining the floor to ceiling perspective of the building. In the area called Galpão, is the space entitled In Between which will function as a public square where artists, researchers residents, and visitors can meet to exchange ideas and expand their knowledge of performance and immaterial art. In this space the original architecture of the building is also maintained and preserved in order to coexist in harmony with the new structures and events held in this area. The exhibition will take place during the next two months, from March 10th to May 10th 2015.
